Twenty-year-old Winnipegger’s Chase the Cure campaign
invites city to ride in with it
Wes Bauer (son of Lyle Bauer, President & CEO, Winnipeg Blue Bombers) rides in to Moncton city limits and welcomes others to join him for a short bike ride
and City Hall bar-b-que
MONCTON, NB - July 31, 2009 – This morning, at 11 a.m. Wes Bauer takes his cross-Canadian cycling journey, Chase the Cure, to the city of Moncton. Wes invites people in the community to join him with their bikes and helmets and ride with him from the Moncton Coliseum to City Hall for a welcome hosted by the City of Moncton and organized by volunteers from the Atlantic Lotteries Corporation. The event will serve as a gesture to welcome Wes to the city and province, and show support for his cause.
“The City of Moncton is proud to welcome, an ambitious young man who is on a very commendable journey,” says Merrill Henderson, Deputy Mayor of Moncton. “He is not so unlike many of our local youth in his drive and passion, and I can't wait to see the influence he has on other young Canadians. We are happy to support his cause, which is clearly uniting people from coast to coast. All the best to Wes as he completes his physical journey, and continues to fight against a disease that affects us all.”
Wes will be joined on his ride in by members of the Moncton Football Club, and will be received by the Deputy Mayor and members of council. Everyone is invited to join Wes and attend a bar-b-que at City Hall, following the ride. Attendees will have an opportunity to hear how Wes’ father’s fight with the disease inspired him to begin this journey and has brought him to where he is today. The Never Alone Foundation will be giving all proceeds raised by the welcome and the events surrounding it to the New Brunswick branch of the Canadian Cancer Society.
“I feel privileged to be spearheading a campaign that truly allows people to make a difference for the many Canadians who are affected by cancer,” says Wes Bauer, Chase the Cure organizer. “My father’s story started this fight for me, and the many stories of the people I’ve met along the way have continued it. Efforts like the Moncton welcome, as well as the many other gracious welcomes the ride has received, reinforce just how much the fight for a cure brings us all together.”
The Never Alone Foundation’s mission is to help individuals and their families in the fight against cancer. It spearheads several fundraising initiatives, including: the ongoing sale of Never Alone wristbands and pins, the Never Alone luncheon, Fish for the Cure, and numerous other events that raise funds to assist with cancer education and awareness, research and patient support services.
Chase the Cure is an initiative in support of the Never Alone Foundation. It is a cross-Canadian bike tour with Wes Bauer that started in Victoria, BC on May 14, and will end in St. John’s, NL, on August 15. The campaign’s main objective is to raise funds and awareness to help end cancer. Donations raised throughout Canada by Chase the Cure will stay in the provinces they are raised, assisting various local cancer programs and provincial foundations.
