Winnipegger Wes Bauer’s Chase the Cure campaign enjoys a government welcome from the Capital City
Wes Bauer (son of Lyle Bauer, President & CEO, Winnipeg Blue Bombers) takes trek to Parliament Hill to be received for his cross-Canadian bike ride for cancer
OTTAWA, ON – July 15, 2009 – Today, at 1 p.m. ET Wes Bauer’s Chase the Cure campaign, a three-month cycling journey to raise funds and awareness for cancer, stops to take in our nation’s capital at Parliament Hill. Upon his arrival, Wes will be shown government appreciation for his efforts to make a difference in the fight against cancer. Wes will be received by Senator Rod Zimmer, and members of parliament, and will share how his father’s battle with cancer inspired him to create this initiative.
“My cause in the senate is youth, and to meet such an outstanding, young Winnipegger like Wes is an honour,” says Senator Rod A. A. Zimmer. “I commend Wes for turning such a tragic event into a national adventure that educates, supports and encourages Canadians from all corners of this country. And as his father is, Wes is also my hero!”
After the greeting, Wes will be given a tour of the historic Parliament buildings, and a chance to learn the history that has shaped Canada into the beautiful country it is today. Wes will have an opportunity to meet several Members of Parliament and raise awareness of his campaign at a government level.
“I’m pleased that Senator Zimmer and his fellow government representatives are using their influence and the public’s great respect for them to make a difference in the fight against cancer,” says Wes Bauer, Chase the Cure organizer. “Ottawa is the heart of Canada. I’m honoured to be invited here, and am excited to see the impact the core of our beautiful country will have in a national campaign for a disease that affects far too many Canadians every year.”
The Never Alone Foundation’s mission is to help individuals and their families in the fight against cancer. It spearheads several fundraising initiatives, including: the ongoing sale of Never Alone wristbands and pins, the Never Alone luncheon, Fish for the Cure, and numerous other events that raise funds to assist with cancer education and awareness, research and patient support services.
Chase the Cure is an initiative in support of the Never Alone Foundation. It is a cross-Canadian bike tour with Wes Bauer that started in Victoria, BC on May 14, and will end in St. John’s, NL, on August 15. The campaign’s main objective is to raise funds and awareness to help end cancer. Donations raised throughout Canada by Chase the Cure will stay in the provinces they are raised, assisting various local cancer programs and provincial foundations.
