A 20-year-old’s cross-Canadian cancer-fighting bike tour
kicks off at Steve Fonyo Beach
Wes Bauer and his dad Lyle Bauer (President & CEO, Winnipeg Blue
Bombers) launch
Chase the Cure, a cycling trip across Canada, to raise
cancer awareness and funds.
VICTORIA, BC – May 14, 2009 - Today, Wes Bauer begins a three-month cycling trip across Canada called Chase the Cure. The launch begins at 9 a.m. at Victoria’s “Mile 0” with Wes briefly speaking about the campaign and his inspiration. Shortly after, Wes dips his bike’s back tire in the waters of Steve Fonyo Beach, marking the official West Coast beginning of his ride. The journey serves as a campaign to raise awareness of cancer and funds for research devoted to finding its cure.
“I feel priviledged to be spear-heading a campaign that truly allows people to make a difference for the many Canadians that are affected by cancer,” says Wes Bauer, the event’s organizer. “My dad has successfully fought the disease, and I believe that if we work together to find a cure, there’s hope that one day no one will have to go through the pain that we did.”
Chase the Cure will take Wes from coast to coast, through 10 provinces and over 100 Canadian communities. Along the way, Wes will be making strategic stops, encouraging people to chase the cure with him, by making donations and joining the ride. With the help of the Never Alone Foundation, all donations will stay in the provinces they are raised, assisting in the research and support necessary for everyone who is locally affected by cancer.
“Wes can’t do this alone,” says Lyle Bauer, President & CEO, Winnipeg Blue Bombers. “It is our hope that people will band together, create events, ride along with him and raise funds for the cause. We’ve already gotten a lot of support, and are thrilled with the creativity and generosity Canadians have shared with us. Together we can win the fight.”
The Never Alone Foundation’s mission is to help individuals and their families in the fight against cancer. It spearheads several fundraising initiatives, including: the ongoing sale of Never Alone wristbands and pins, the Never Alone luncheon, Fish for the Cure, and numerous other events that raise funds to assist with cancer education and awareness, research and patient support services.
Chase the Cure is an initiative in support of the Never Alone Foundation.
It is a cross-Canadian bike tour with Wes Bauer to raise funds and awareness
to help end cancer. Donations raised throughout Canada by Chase the Cure will
stay in the provinces they
are raised, assisting various local cancer programs
and provincial foundations.
